Ruby Snyder, 85

Meet Ruby Snyder, 85 years young

Ruby has always loved books and through the vivid settings described in her favorite stories, she developed a secret wish to visit a lighthouse. It was a dream that stayed with her for years, waiting for the right moment to come true.

Back in 1965, while living in Newfoundland, Ruby could glimpse these towering structures from afar but never had the chance to explore one up close. Raising four children and supporting her husband kept her days full, leaving little time for her own dreams.

Now living in Ontario at 85, Ruby's wish to climb a lighthouse still lingered in her heart. Her life has been marked by selflessness, always putting her family’s needs before her own. Though her days are marked by resilience, loneliness often accompanies her since her husband’s passing six years ago.

Ruby’s long-held dream resurfaced during a heartfelt conversation with her daughter, Jasmin, as they shared their personal aspirations. It was then that Ruby revealed her lifelong wish—to stand atop a lighthouse and take in the view she had imagined for so many years. Determined to make it a reality, Jasmin reached out to We Are Young for help in fulfilling her mother’s dream, as accessing a lighthouse to climb is no simple task.

Kincardine, on the shores of Lake Huron, became the perfect destination. The iconic white lighthouse with its striking red roof mirrored the scenes Ruby had envisioned. Even with arthritic knees, she was determined to climb its steps, one at a time, savouring every moment.

The day arrived, filled with anticipation and excitement. Ruby felt right at home with her daughter Jasmin and her beloved grandson assisting her the entire way. The lighthouse guides gave her an unforgettable tour, offering both knowledge and encouragement while making sure Ruby felt safe every step of the way. Their warmth and humor filled the day with laughter, making the climb even more special.

Ruby tackled the stairs like a trooper. Each step was a testament to her determination and spirit. After ascending to the top, she was greeted with the stunning view she had always imagined. The breathtaking view and the sense of accomplishment were unforgettable for Ruby. When she made her way back to the bottom, Ruby’s smile said it all. With tears in her eyes, she took her daughter’s hands, looked at her, and said, “Thank you for this.” In that quiet moment, words weren’t necessary—this experience had been everything she’d hoped for and more.

As a keepsake, Ruby brought home a fridge magnet of the lighthouse—a daily reminder of her extraordinary adventure. Sharing her story with neighbors and friends, Ruby inspired those around her, proving it’s never too late to create new memories. For a day, she wasn’t just Ruby the mother or Ruby the widow; she was Ruby the adventurer, living her dream and inspiring others to chase their own.

Granting Ruby’s wish not only brought her immense joy in that moment, but she now wholeheartedly believes that age should never be a barrier to living life to the fullest.
