Normand MacDonald, 71

Meet Normand MacDonald, 71, from New Brunswick. Normand has always dreamed of understanding the intricate process of creating artisanal cheeses—cheeses made by hand, crafted with the traditional skills of skilled cheesemakers.

Normand's early years in Moncton, New Brunswick, were marked by responsibility. His parents' divorce when he was 16, and had to leave school at a young age to spend more time working to support and care for everyone in his family.

In his early 20s, Normand joined the Trappist Monastery in Quebec, known for its Oka cheese production. There, he became fascinated by the meticulous process of artisanal cheese-making, which played a central role in monastery life. Engaged in bread-making and other handcrafted practices, Normand developed a profound interest in artisanal craftsmanship, sparking his passion for cheese-making.

In addition to his time as a Trappist Monk, Normand's journey led him through diverse careers. Following his monastery years, he spent 33 fulfilling years as a nurse, alongside part-time roles at a funeral home and a few years as a florist. Later, he pursued another passion by becoming a pastor—all endeavours he had long desired, each allowing him to connect deeply with people.

In 2023, Normand battled a severe infection that required a month-long hospital stay, uncertain recovery, and a challenging month recuperating at home. As Normand reflected, 'tomorrow is never guaranteed.' This health scare deeply impressed upon him the uncertainty of life and reinforced his determination to pursue his dreams. And with that, Normand's desire to learn about the process of making artisanal cheese never wavered, becoming even more steadfast in his pursuit of this long-held goal.

Thanks to the warm hospitality of the Acadian community of Caraquet, Normand’s dream came true as he spent a memorable morning at Fromagerie Les Blancs D'Arcadie, actively participating in the cheese-making process from start to finish. His hope is that other seniors will learn of his adventure and be motivated to realize that anything is possible, regardless of age.

In Normand's heartfelt words following his wish: "Dear Friends from WAY, you have created a way for an aging man to finally satisfy his curiosity concerning making 'du Fromage'. Please don’t underestimate the importance of the program you created… you truly make a difference in our lives."

In celebrating Normand's journey and the fulfillment of his lifelong dream, we're reminded that with perseverance and community support, age is no barrier to achieving the extraordinary.
