Joan Boutilier, 81

Meet Joan Boutilier, 81 years young.  Joan has long been a cornerstone of her community in Sheet Harbour, Nova Scotia, where she was born and raised. Known for her selflessness and generosity, she consistently goes the extra mile—whether driving other seniors to their appointments or lending a hand wherever needed.

Joan was married to her husband for 60 years until his passing in 2013, and together, they raised four children. Today, her family has grown to include six grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and two step-great-grandchildren. Joan was a stay-at-home mom until her children were in school, after which she worked at a grocery store to help support the family. Through it all, her greatest joy has always been her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Her daughter, Beverly, has always admired Joan’s giving nature and knew her mother had one special wish—the only thing she has ever asked for for herself: to meet Alan Doyle, her favorite singer. Joan has been a devoted fan since his days with Great Big Sea and has continued to follow his solo career with equal passion. Her admiration runs so deep that she even takes pride in having visited his hometown of Petty Harbour. Although Joan had seen him perform live, she has been hopeful over the years of trying to meet him in person.

As Joan grows older, Beverly has been determined to help her mother in any way she can. Knowing how much Alan Doyle means to her, Beverly couldn’t imagine a more meaningful experience than giving her the opportunity to meet him.

After years of Joan hoping to meet Alan in person, we were thrilled to help her wish come true this summer at the iconic Shore Club in Hubbards. When the moment finally arrived, Joan was so nervous she was shaking, with tears in her eyes. Though they had only a few precious minutes together, Joan made the most of them, sharing how much she loved his music and writing.

As Alan said his goodbyes and began walking away, Joan couldn’t resist running after him to ask for one more hug. Our photographer, Melissa, captured the heartfelt moment—a memory Joan will cherish forever. As they stepped outside, Joan turned to Beverly and Melissa with a smile, saying, “Never wait to do something. Just do it.”

Joan hasn’t stopped talking about her encounter since, sharing her joy with anyone who will listen. Meeting Alan Doyle wasn’t just a dream come true—it was a moment that lit up her world and left a lasting moment that she shares with anyone who will listen.

Joan's story is a testament to the power of dreams and the importance of recognizing those who give selflessly. By helping make her wish come true, Joan is reminded that she is valued and appreciated, showing everyone that it's never too late to pursue one's dreams.
