As you know, We Are Young (WAY) is an organization whose mission it is to grant unfulfilled wishes to seniors living in Nova Scotia.
Since the beginning of COVID-19, we were forward facing the challenges that not only our organization, but the entire world, was facing. We immediately recognized that society as a whole would experience many of the issues seniors face as it relates to loneliness and isolation. And thus, we immediately adapted our operations to maximize the impact we could have on individual seniors throughout our province. Immediately, we started delivering care packages to seniors who needed our support. These care packages have been designed to safely provide seniors with social and recreational engagement opportunities while reinforcing sentiments of care, appreciation, and social connectedness. In 2020, we delivered nearly 3,250 care packages across our province, and throughout this process, we have received an overwhelming response from our senior population on the profound impact it’s had on their mental health.
Fortunately, our province has loosened restrictions since the beginning of the pandemic, and our organization has been able to slowly resume operations under new provincial guidelines. Although we are able to grant some bigger wishes again, we realize the important role that these care packages still play, and thus, have chosen to carry out both activities simultaneously.
COVID-19 has proven our resiliency as a team, and as an organization. This pandemic has allowed us to grow in ways we never would have imagined, and has allowed us to impacted more seniors than we ever thought possible.
